As the Data Platform Engineer, You will sit within our Risk and Compliance Tribe. The Risk Data & Machine Learning Platform (RDMLP) is responsible for building platform solutions to allow data scientists to autonomously deploy their models as production systems for Risk, Fraud and Compliance and other domains across SumUp.

Some of the tools and technologies used in the team:

Python and PySpark for building data pipelines, services, SDKs, and applications
AWS Cloud for compute (EKS), storage (S3, Keyspaces for Cassandra), streaming (MSK), data management (Glue, Athena) and machine learning (SageMaker) infrastructure
Kubernetes and Helm for defining our live, streaming, batch and interactive compute workloads
Neo4j and Nebula for graph processing and analysis
ArgoWorkflows for orchestrating data ingestion, processing and training jobs
MLFlow and JupyterLab for supporting interactive experimental work
SpaCy, LangChain and Streamlit for building user-facing generative AI applications
Github Actions for implementing CI/CD patterns to ensure safe and reliable deployment processes for us and our users
Kafka for data exchange and building streaming data applications

What you’ll do:

Building self-service platform solutions for common data engineering and data science patterns so that our users can use them autonomously. As different domains come with different data challenges, our squad provides the general purpose data pipeline blueprints that efficiently solve the core data and infrastructure problems, so that data scientists can focus on their domain.
Building solutions that ensure our users can trust their data and models, ranging from CI/CD/CT, to data quality monitoring solutions, experiment tracking, and model analytics.
Expanding the capabilities of our data lake, feature store, and MLOps tooling to cover new machine learning use cases that enable more parts of SumUp to deploy machine learning models as well.
Building not only batch data pipelines, but also streaming solutions for near-real-time data products having both low data latency, as well as low serving latency.
Contributing to architecture, guidelines and best practices for building and evolving our data & ML platform.
Working closely with the stakeholders, enabling them in using our platform capabilities, and engaging in knowledge sharing activities.
Participating in hiring new engineers for the team

You’ll be great for this role if:

You have experience building data engineering systems, both on the data and software engineering (5+ years of full time work experience in Data Engineering, a related background in backend or infrastructure development is be a plus)
Have built production solutions in Python and PySpark (or Spark)
Have familiarity with using AWS cloud services and provisioning them with infrastructure-as-code solutions like Terraform
Have working knowledge of Kafka or similar data streaming systems
Have familiarity with Kubernetes and Helm for container orchestration
You have a founder’s mentality: doing more with less, building pragmatic solutions, and moving autonomously
You’re motivated by building and growing a platform that grows and creates value over a long term.
You have a user-centric mindset and enjoy enabling the users to succeed and solve business needs with the tools you’re providing
You’re interested in exploring new technologies and emerging practices in data management for machine learning and generative AI applications.
As a plus, we also value experience in data engineering in other languages (SQL, Scala, Java) and distributed compute systems, experience in the financial services domain, domain knowledge of data science and machine learning, and distributed systems and database
