Stellenbezeichnung: DevOps Engineer for Cloud and HPC (100%, m/f/x, up to TV-L 13, scientific employee) HLRS_31_2023

Firma:

Arbeitsort / Location: Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg

Job Beschreibung: Offer Description

The High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) was founded as Germany’s first federal high-performance computing (HPC) center. It operates one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. It offers a wide range of HPC solutions and services for universities, research institutions, and industrial partners. Furthermore, HLRS holds a leading position worldwide in the research areas of engineering and global system sciences. Staff scientists at HLRS investigate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing (QC). HLRS is significantly involved in international and national research projects across all research areas mentioned above.

Orchestration of Workflows in Federated Infrastructures

Massive growth in the cloud computing industry over the last decade has been accompanied by the rise of many new applications requiring ultra-low latency, security, and location awareness. Therefore, modern cloud applications usually run on distributed computer systems (HPC, Cloud, Edge) and are divided into software components that must run at high availability.

The standard solution for orchestrating large clusters is Kubernetes, an open-source framework for deploying, scaling, and managing containerized applications. However, Kubernetes is designed for reliable homogeneous clusters. Moreover, although many applications and extensions are available for Kubernetes, none is designed to optimize performance and energy usage or address data and job locality.

HLRS is currently building its capacity to support better these distributed computing scenarios that involve HPC, Cloud, and Edge. AI training and inference workflows between HPC and Edge devices are particularly interesting. For this reason, we are looking for a

DevOps Engineer for Cloud and HPC

(100%, m/f/x, up to TV-L 13, scientific employee)

HLRS_31_2023

to work on the European research project DECICE (Device-Edge-Cloud Intelligent Collaboration Framework) to face these exciting challenges with us. DECICE aims at developing an AI-based, open, and portable cloud management framework for automatic and adaptive optimization and deployment of applications in a federated infrastructure, including computing from the very large (e.g., HPC systems) to the very small (e.g., IoT sensors connected on edge).

The advertised position offers the possibility of a doctorate, which HLRS actively supports.

Your job

 Technical Integration: Collaborate with the project team to contribute to the definition of the overall DECICE architecture and API. Your role will involve designing interfaces facilitating interaction with various target infrastructures, including HPC systems, cloud platforms, and edge computing environments.

 Cloud Framework Integration: Lead the technical aspects of integrating the DECICE API with Kubernetes and developing a monitoring solution to capture hardware- and software-specific metrics using Prometheus. Your responsibilities will include actively working on the technical integration to ensure seamless compatibility across different platforms.

 Cross-Infrastructure Collaboration: Work at the interface of HPC, cloud, and edge infrastructures within the context of the DECICE management framework. You will be responsible for fostering collaboration between these domains, promoting interoperability, and ensuring a holistic approach to infrastructure management.

 Continuous Integration and Delivery (CI/CD): Establish and manage a robust CI/CD platform for DECICE to conduct integration tests efficiently. Your efforts in setting up and maintaining this platform will be critical in maintaining code quality, accelerating development cycles, and ensuring the reliability of the DECICE framework.

 Technical Reporting: Contribute to technical documentation and reports related to DECICE’s integration and development activities. It includes documenting your work, troubleshooting steps, and solutions implemented.

Your qualifications

 Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant technical field.

 Proven experience in DevOps or similar technical roles, with a strong focus on cloud technologies, containerization (Kubernetes), and monitoring tools (Prometheus).

 Proficiency in setting up and managing CI/CD pipelines.

 Excellent technical communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

 Linux experience and programming skills in a high-level programming language such as Python.

 You are fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Ideally, your profile is completed as follows

 Familiarity with HPC and edge computing environments.

 Proficiency in agile software development methodologies.

 Demonstrated experience with version control systems, such as Git or SVN.

 A strong aptitude for conceptual thinking and a solution-oriented approach to problem-solving.

 A foundational understanding or a keen interest in acquiring knowledge and applying machine learning techniques within the context of DECICE, particularly in the implementation of training and inference workflows across cloud and edge infrastructures using platforms such as Sedna or Kubeflow.

As a member of our team, you can expect

Ø A professional working environment in a highly motivated international team.

Ø Exciting insights into the latest and best technologies in the fields of simulation, big data, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.

Ø A very good working atmosphere in an interdisciplinary team of top scientists and project partners.

Ø Flexible working hours, including choice between trust-based working hours or a flextime model.

Ø The possibility of arrangements for working independently of location (e.g., home office) (dt. ortsunabhängiges Arbeiten).

Ø Contract and remuneration according to the collective agreement of the federal states (TV-L).

Ø Attractive social benefits of the public sector.

Ø Allowance of €25 per month for local public transport.

Ø Use of the wide range of further education and training opportunities (e.g., soft skills, languages, specialist courses, management seminars) and the sports facilities of the University of Stuttgart (on-site and virtual).
