Job Beschreibung: 29.08.2023

Studentenjobs / Praktika / Abschlussarbeiten Chemie

The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the area of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for urgent societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health etc.) by modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the full spectrum from basic over applied research up to pre-industrial development and is performed in collaboration with national and international partners from university, academy and industry. The institute is part of Forschungsverbund Berlin (https://www.fv-berlin.de/) and a member of the Leibniz Association . You can find more details on the institute webpage: .

The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung currently looking for a Master student (m/f/d) for the master thesis topic:

„Growth and characterization of two dimensional NbSe2-films for superconducting quantum bits”.

Two dimensional (2D) materials are of great interest because of their unique physical and chemical properties. Among the 2D-materials, NbSe2 has attracted much attention due to the persistency of superconductivity into the 2D-limit. Further, 2D-materials were proven to enhance the performance of superconducting qubits: by manual exfoliation and stacking 2D-NbSe2 and a monolayer of 2D-dielectric into a superconducting-capacitor, the lateral dimensions of the qubit shunt capacitor could be reduced by a factor 100 opening a pathway to higher integration of superconducting qubits.

The aim of the Master thesis is to grow NbSe2 films and characterize them in terms of their crystalline quality and electronic properties such as the superconducting transition temperature (TC). For this purpose, the Master student will grow Nb films via physical vapor deposition which will be selenized in a separate chamber. The quality of the grown films will be investigated to ensure a fully closed and homogeneous film. Once the grown films have acceptable quality, the transition temperature will be determined.

The candidate will perform the research activities in the “Semiconductor Nanostructures” group.

Your tasks:

  • Growth of NbSe2 films on different substrates like glass, Sapphire, Silicon
  • Optimization of the deposition process by varying the substrate temperature, growth rate of Niobium and Selenium
  • Characterization of the films by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and absorption spectra.
  • Temperature-dependent measurements 1K – 320K to determine the transition temperature .

The candidate must have a Bachelor or an equivalent degree in physics, physical chemistry,

chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline. Because of the international team, candidates with good English language skills would be preferred.

The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung actively supports work-life balance and is an equal opportunity employer. Female candidates are encouraged to apply and will be preferred in case of adequate qualification. Among equally qualified applicants preference will be given to disabled candidates.
