What you’ll do

Scope of responsibilities include research and development on AI based solutions for multiplexed tissue imaging supporting drug development and biomarker discovery programs, in close collaboration with interfacing functions at global AstraZeneca, in active scientific exchange with the computer vision and AI community.

Generate decisive data based on the whole slide image analysis of multiplexed imaging modalities to advance the Early Oncology drug and biomarker development programs.

Further develop and apply latest artificial intelligence methods to support image and data analysis in Translational Medicine.

Contribute to method and software research and development across multiple functions in the larger organization.

Disseminate knowledge, best practices and developed algorithms and software tools to internal audiences in project meetings, AI seminars, documentation and code libraries, and to the external academic community with conference presentations and journal publications.

Collaborate closely with project stakeholders and interfacing functions such as pathology, quality assurance, data management, software development, data science and bioinformatics.

Comply with the AstraZeneca General Laboratory Standard to support product quality and regulatory compliance in the development, manufacture and distribution of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, Medicinal Products and Devices.

Essential for the role

M. Sc., Ph.D. degree in computer sciences, mathematics, physics, bioinformatics or comparable degree, with a focus on computer vision and image-derived data analysis or equivalent

Experience in building and deploying computer vision pipelines, previous experience with (bio-)medical images, especially digital pathology whole slide images, is a strong plus

Experience in at least one aspect of object detection/instance segmentation/panoptic segmentation, self-/weakly-/semi- supervised learning, image-to-image translation or image normalization

Experience in Python. Knowledge of relevant libraries for computer vision (e.g. PyTorch, Keras, TensorFlow, Scikit-Image, openCV etc.) and data analysis (e.g. Pandas, Scikit-Learn, numpy/scipy etc.)

Experience in best practices for software development incl. code formatting, unit testing, version control, experiment tracking, CI pipelines

Track record of scientific publications, conference contributions and/or delivered AI solutions in scientific industry projects in the field of computer vision and/or machine learning for data analysis.

Scientific excellence and passion to work on innovative ways to address image data science challenges in Early Oncology.

Talent to conceptualize, build, communicate and implement novel scientific ideas aligned with the drug development and biomarker strategies.

Keeps pace with the latest advances in the field of image analysis and machine learning

Desirable for the role

Project experience in analyzing multiplexed immunofluorescence images, and correlating image features with response to therapy, using latest deep learning methods (Graph NN, Vision Transformer).

Experience in data analysis and at least one dedicated software environment dedicated to data analysis (Python/pandas, etc.). Knowledge of statistical methods for data analysis (incl. feature selection and survival analysis).

Working in an agile project team using SCRUM or a similar framework.
